Alongside the silver dollar, it served as a cornerstone of the young nation's monetary system—so significant that all other gold denominations were measured in fractions or multiples of it. Although authorized in 1792, production did not begin until 1795 due to stringent security and bonding requirements at the U.S. Mint. These high-denomination coins were struck only on demand, resulting in extremely low mintages—fewer than 10,000 coins per year until 1799—making them exceptionally rare and desirable.
