Although authorized in 1792, production did not begin until 1795 due to stringent security and bonding requirements at the U.S. Mint. These high-denomination coins were struck only on demand, resulting in extremely low mintages—fewer than 10,000 coins per year until 1799—making them exceptionally rare and desirable.
