To coincide with the 35th anniversary of the Gold Eagle the U.S. Mint introduced a new reverse design in 2021. Jennie Norris’ dignified portrait of a bald eagle is the new Gold Eagle reverse. The eagle is shown in profile, with its strong, curved beak and thick plumage rendered meticulously. Population in Type 2 Gold:

At the end of production for the Type 1 reverse 2021 Gold Eagles, the U.S. Mint kept and numbered each of the last 500 coins. As they transitioned over to the new Type 2 reverse, they also kept the first 500 coins produced in gold and silver.

Why are these coins so special?

These limited-edition coins marking the monumental transition between the old and new designs for the Gold and Silver Eagles were produced during a special April 2021 ceremony recognizing their importance to the numismatic community. The event featured the striking of the last of the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagles bearing their original designs and the production of first of those coins featuring the new design.  

Former United States Mint Director David J. Ryder personally struck the bullion coins offered, operating the coin presses at the Mint’s West Point, NY, production facility in April 2021. David was quoted as saying, “One of my greatest achievements was overseeing the transformation of the Gold and Silver Eagles for their 35th anniversary. We made sure this group of coins captured the excitement that this milestone represents to the numismatic community.”  David J. Ryder, was the 34th and 39th Director of the US Mint and is now one of the most prominent signers in the NGC Signature Label program. Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) have certified, graded, and packaged all the Dusk and Dawn coins.
